Your shape—your posture, balance, and tone—literally shapes your horse's path. When your body is aligned, your horse can flow through the course with precision, rhythm, and ease. When it isn’t, your horse mirrors your asymmetry, losing straightness, impulsion, or confidence between obstacles.
Posture and alignment aren't static positions—they are living relationships between you, gravity, and your horse. This relationship becomes the foundation of all functional movement in Working Equitation, where accuracy, balance, and fluidity are everything.

Working Equitation is the ultimate test of adaptability. From the collected focus of Dressage to the athletic agility of Ease of Handling and the speed and flow of the timed course, your alignment determines how effectively you translate intention into motion.
In Dressage: alignment affects precision, rhythm, and self-carriage.
In Ease of Handling: it governs the geometry of your turns, the accuracy of your approach, and the horse's ability to mirror your balance.
In Speed: it keeps your aids organized and your horse supple even under adrenaline.
Your posture is your horse's frame of reference. If you tilt, twist, or collapse, your horse must reorganize its own balance to keep you aboard—compromising rhythm and accuracy. If you stay centered, elastic, and aligned, your horse moves as though guided by invisible lines.
2. Key Elements of Alignment in the WE Rider
Pelvis: The Steering Axis
Your pelvis is the center of direction. A neutral pelvis allows your horse's back to lift and flex freely.
Too far forward (anterior tilt) and your seat drives into the horse’s loins, creating tension.
Too far back (posterior tilt) and you block forward energy.
Spine: The Conduit of Communication
A vertically stacked spine (ear-shoulder—hip—heel) transmits energy efficiently between you and the horse. It keeps your hands quiet, your seat stable, and your aids refined. When your spine collapses or overarches, your horse's back reflects that distortion, often losing throughness or rhythm.
Rib Cage & Shoulders: The Dynamic Upper Frame
An open chest and balanced shoulders create room for breath and fine motor control. In WE, this becomes vital for quick adjustments—tike reaching for the garrocha or turning through the double slalom.
Legs & Feet: Anchors of Balance
Your lower limbs form the stabilizing triangle that keeps you centered through Lateral work, speed turns, and obstacle transitions.
Pressure should flow evenly from inner thigh to heel, allowing subtle leg aids without gripping.

1. Wall Line Drill — Stand with heels, hips, shoulders, and head lightly touching a wall. Feel your natural curves; breathe into your rib cage.
2. Pelvic Mobility Rocks — On an exercise ball, tilt the pelvis forward and back, then side to side, finding center.
3. Breath-to-Spine Connection — Inhale to lengthen, exhale to soften. This is the breath you'll use when you sit into transitions.
4. Mirror Check - From the side, ensure your ear—shoulder—hip—heel line is intact and your rib cage isn't flaring forward.
Mounted Alignment Reset
At walk: close your eyes for a few strides; feel which seat bone carries more weight. Adjust gently until even.
In transitions: think "stack, then send"—align first, then apply the aid.
Through obstacles: visualize your spine as a plumb line that guides your horse's center through every line and curve.
